What he said was dickish (especially given who it involved), but if you suspended everyone for dickish on-air comments, Chris Matthews would've been out ten years ago. Shuster is not half as obnoxious as Matthews or Carlson and is twice the journalist (he did great work on the CIA leak case).

I feel the same way as you. Matthews and others on MSNBC clearly have some gender issues, and I think they tend to act like sportscasters more than journalists when covering the primaries. However Schuster did do some much-needed, in-depth reporting during the Libby case/scandal (his level of detail was quite impressing). And, he can ba a valuable journalist in interviews with bullshit artists that call for confrontation. His comment was stupid, but it makes no sense to fire him. A better solution would have just been a more substantial apology plus a network-wide grilling from the execs and management. Also, they could perhaps balance the commentary with more (assertive) female guests, like Rachel Maddow, who wouldn't let this pass unchallenged.

Ultimately, I'm just not a big fan of placing so much significance one stupid remark. I tends to chill open expression, which is critical to opinionated shows like Hardball, Tucker, etc. People can be a little too sensitive for my tastes when it comes to stuff like this. Moreover, Lou Dobbs says something far more offensive on a nightly basis.

Again, though, I agree that MSNBC needs to do something to address the unique kind of gender-insensitivity that seems to come from many of its personnel. Schuster just doesn't seem like one of the consistent offenders.

Yeah - I read that too - I think it was Taylor Marsh who said Shuster dug in his heels and originally refused to apologize.

Oh - just found some of it - here's part of what she said on her blog:

"That any professional journalist 'stood his ground' after the comments Shuster made illustrates that he obviously didn't think anyone at the network cared if he smeared Chelsea Clinton or Hillary. So, the big kahuna, NBC, had to step in and fix the giant mess Shuster made. After all, if Clinton actually bowed out of the debate because of this, it would not only cost NBC money, it would be such a HUGE embarrassment for the network.

This is really a shame, though. David Shuster was such a good reporter on the Libby case and others. Arrogance and NBC's top-down policy to "select" the candidate (like when Jack Welch set network policy to get George W. Bush elected) did Shuster in - with our help, of course.

This is pretty sad. Shuster's only bias was pro-Edwards and I truly hope this overreaction to his comment doesn't cost him his job. He is a smart guy and a good correspondent.

I read earlier today that Obama has declined to participate in the Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia ABC7/POLITICO Candidate Forum - but that they're going ahead with it anyway, Clinton only, I guess.

That probably p*ssed him off - that they'd do it without him - so now it's tit for tat, so to speak.

I wonder, though, if Hillary pulled out of the MSNBC debate - because of what MSNBC did and not, like Obama, because she just didn't feel like participating - if MSNBC would still go through with it, leaving her out.

I would think NBC would cancel in that case - since it would expose their true agenda too clearly. But, ya never know...

Seriously, I think everyone knows that what Schuster had to say was a mistake and wrong, but some people here are just whining and having a bunch of fake outrage. If anyone actually watched him, Schuster has shown to be a pretty good reporter and journalist, especially on Plamegate, and even in the midst of hosts like Tucker Carlson, MSNBC actually has a better network than CNN and Fox News (of course), and let's not even speak of the pro-Clinton bias on CNN. So please people, let's end this fake outrage syndrome, accept his apology and move on.

p.s. this is coming from a current Clinton supporter.

it was msnbc that pushed the Plame story, it was msnbc that got critical of Bush's moves to kill habeas corpus with the military commission act.

Msnbc has been the biggest force in the news for calling the republicans on their shit, and it's like you guys are forgetting that.

What David Shuster said is so deplorable.

At MSNBC its has become a disgusting pattern when it comes to Clinton, every one(except Dan Abraham) is trying to best one another in their outrageous comments.

David Shuster was not the most agressive perpetrators in MSNBC but he is trying to shore up his credentials(?) to come up the ladder and
the respect(?) from his peers(Chris Mathews,Keith O etc.).

Remember a few days ago when Chris Mathews got
heat from his sexist remarks who was standing by his senior colleague publicly and getting a thank you, its the upcoming Junior reporter

An MSNBC production source says that it was only after the Hillary campaign threatened to boycott future debates that Shuster was informed of his suspension.

Will Shuster's suspension be enough to get Hillary to recommit to the debate? Her campaign is refusing to answer questions about whether she'll appear, or what they're asking for in the talks. This suggests that they want to leave the network twisting in the wind on the debate question, perhaps to "work the refs," send a signal to MSNBC and other news outlets about what they will and won't tolerate.

So, Shuster wasn't suspended UNTIL Hillary's team said they might not debate on NBC. Typical corporate media.

And, her campaign seems to be holding out, forcing NBC to be fair (what a concept!) - and whatever other stuff they want.

having begala and carville was, to my mind, inappropriate. on the other hand since they've left i see Carl Bernstein, Jack McCaffrey (sp?), and Gloria Borger every time i turn CNN on...all Clinton bashers of the most black/white variety.

i admit to not watching CNN much, though -- are there others? I did see Begala on with an Obama booster on election night.

Yesterday afternoon on CNN Jack Cafferty REPEATED THE SAME LIE - that Bill Clinton had called Obama's whole campaign a fairy tale.

Not only did no one question it, but all the bobble-heads did just exactly what they always do - they sat there and bobbled their heads.

No one - NO ONE - told the truth. That LIE is now the CW - as they planned all along.

again, i don't watch CNN all that often, usuallly just when I'm traveling or on election nights, but post-dropping Begala and Carville, from when I do see it I'm not sure why CNN has a rep of being even handed -- seems to me they reflect the MSM Hillary hatred quite strongly. And Bernstein is over the top (speaking of which, i watched 5 minutes of Hannity tonight -- that guy is certifiable on Clinton, truly looney tunes).
